Welcome to our new home tour! If you’re new around here, you might not know that my husband and I bought our first home back in November. For the first (almost) six years of our marriage, Russell was in the Navy, so we rented wherever we lived. He separated from the Navy though, and we’ve finally settled down for good and knew we wanted to buy our own place.
When we went looking for our house our biggest want was to find something where we could host. After living on base, where getting non-military friends over to your house is a pain, we were so excited to be able to love others well by having them over. We ended up finding a house that’s SUPER close to both my parent’s and Russell’s, and even though it wasn’t exactly what we wanted, the location was too amazing to pass up.
Which is how we ended up with our own little fixer upper.
So, without further adieu, welcome to the home tour! These pictures were all taken as soon as we got the keys. So they are very much “befores”. If you like this post, let me know in the comments, because I’d love to share more about projects we’re doing around the house!
Let’s just go ahead and start the tour here since this has been our first project, and major renovation. These pictures aren’t great, because the room was SO cramped — it was incredibly hard to get a decent picture of the room as a whole.
Also, as you look at these pictures, note all the things that were left behind — all of these pictures were taken before we’d moved ANYTHING in.
At the time of me actually writing this post it’s March … so we’ve been here about 4 months already and the renovation of this bathroom is well underway. We’ve completely gutted and rebuilt this room, and it’s unrecognizable in these pictures. To stay up to date on our projects around here, go follow my second “for fun” instagram.
Next up is our master — which we have not yet slept in at all. We had to knock out and rebuild some walls for the bathroom project, so we never bothered to move our bedroom into the room itself — instead we set up our room in one of the living rooms for the time being.
There’s really not much to this room honestly. But there are some definite changes coming its way (goodbye parquet — hello carpeting!)
Russell’s Office/Gamer Room
This closet is absurdly large, and then it has a second cedar closet off the side of it (which we’ve dubbed the cat closet). I guess the first actual project we did was putting cat flaps into the door to Russell’s office and the cat closet. That way I can shut the door to Russell’s messy space but the cats can still get in to do their thing.
I would honestly love to rip out some of those shelves and really open this space up more for Russell, but I think I’ve been vetoed on that.
This is the guest bathroom, and currently what we’re using as our bathroom. I’d love to gut this room one day and really open it up (why did anyone ever think headers were a good idea??) and add more lighting, but this room will probably be the very last project we tackle. If you’ve got thoughts on simple ways to make it not so … dated, let me know!
Wow. Looking at this picture blows my mind a bit, because this room is completely different now. Gone are the curtains, the curtain rods, and the carpet. And it’s been painted! I’m just waiting on my dad and husband, Russell to put some ship-lap up on one of the walls.
Well, and we have to put new carpet down. Which is sad because this was some really nice carpet, but the previous owner’s dog had peed all over it. Such a bummer.
First Living Room
Sorry about how dark this picture is — there aren’t any lights in this room at all. And yes, that says first living room. We’ve got two in this house AND a large sun room. It’s a bit overkill, honestly.
Right now, this is the room where we have our bedroom stuff set up. It’s the very first room you see when you walk into the house from the front doors, and there’s no door, so it forces us to keep it clean LOL
Once we get the bathroom remodel finished and can actually move into our bedroom, this will become the “den” or game room. The TV will go in here, along with the Switch, Wii, etc. and we’re also planning to put a table in here for board games.
There are quite a few things I want done to this area: new light fixture (everyone hits their head on this one), painting, new flooring, plus I’d love to grab a cute little bench to put against the wall, and our map will hang above it. But for now, this is what it looks like.
There’s some serious updating to be done once we get this baby on the wall, but this is what it looked like before we moved across country the second time. It’s always my favorite part of our home.
Another room that feels completely different — unfortunately this carpet had to go as well. So as I type this, I’m sitting here at my desk with subfloor beneath my feet. Oh so classy.

Second Living Room
Another room with very little lighting. This is the living room we’re currently using as “the” living room, but I suspect that once we get the TV and gaming stuff into the other, that we won’t use this one much at all unless it’s winter and we want to sit by the fire.
I would love to tear out these built-ins and really open this room up. Right now it feels incredibly closed in because there’s really only one open wall — which means the large furniture HAS to go there. I’m not a fan, but thus far only my sister and my great aunt and uncle agree with me on tearing them out.
This room was a huge selling point for us — 3 walls of windows with a beautiful view of our backyard? We knew that we would love it, but the cats too! Unfortunately, it became the room where we stored all of our boxes because we didn’t have furniture for it and it was out of the way. And it’s taken us much longer than we planned to have a chance to unpack. With 2 rooms completely out of commission, and 3 that would just have to be re-packed again if we unpacked …. it hasn’t been a priority to unpack most of our things
Look at that window! It’s got an extra wide seat and the cats just love it. Pretty much nothing has changed in this room yet, other than the addition of furniture, that is!
The kitchen might be the only room in the house that only really needs cosmetic upgrades. I think pretty much every room has something I’d like to rip out or rip up besides this one. Although, my goodness this wallpaper is SO bad in here. I hope that our next big project will be painting these cabinets, but I also hope we don’t tackle it for a little while! But the lighting in here, the layout, and that window? So amazing. This was by far the best kitchen we saw when looking at all the houses we looked at.
Also, if you’ve got thoughts on what to do to hide those electrical boxes (besides curtains) I’m all ears!
Another room, another set of cabinets I’d love to rip out. Are you seeing a pattern? The minimalist in me just sees all of these as junk collectors. The cabinets across from the washer and dryer are pretty much empty. We just don’t need all this cabinet space!
The very last room in the house … our little half bath.
And that’s it! Welcome to our home, and if you want to see more posts about updates and projects we’re doing, be sure to let me know!
